The commonwealth graves commission record 160 deaths this day 80 years ago, the average age was 31.
British vessel Scottish Standard was damaged by Luftwaffe aircraft northwest of Scotland. British vessel “Rigmor” was sunk by Luftwaffe aircraft.
British submarine HMS Regent (below) attacked German ships Arta, Heraklea, Menes and Martiza carrying German Afrika Korps troops from Naples, Italy to Tripoli escorted by Italian destroyers Freccia, Saetta, and Turbine. Menes was damaged by a torpedo hit but was able to be towed to Tripoli. Saetta counterattacked HMS Regent, causing damage.
Enemy activity by night consisted of widespread raids over East Anglia, with aerodromes apparently the principal objectives, and an attack by about 70 aircraft on the Swansea area.
