3. Enemy air activity: generally very lively activity and numerous flights over the Channel Islands and the 716th Division sector. On 15 January a German fighter shot down a Spitfire near Bayeux; pilot killed. A goods train near Valognes was bombed the same day, causing slight damage. On 21 January Carpiquet airfield near Caen was attacked with thirty to forty bombs; railway track near Caen was destroyed. Also on 21 January, a minesweeper northwest of Cherbourg was attacked with ten to twelve bombs, without damage.
5. On 29 January the steamer Claus Wilhelm, carrying personnel travelling on duty and leave to Alderney, rammed a patrol boat off St Peter Port. The steamer, only slightly damaged, towed the seriously damaged patrol boat into St Peter Port harbour, where it sank. No casualties.
