Diary Entry

7 December 1942 Additional account of the convoy attack off Jersey

Editorial note: Dated by the stated event, 7 December, within the 5–8 December diary block. This supplements an existing convoy incident. The diary gives twenty attackers and three burning ships reaching harbour; the 17 December intelligence summary gives roughly ten attackers and two damaged ships. These are parallel accounts, not separate attacks.

At 14:00 on 7 December, twenty Spitfires attacked a convoy from Saint-Malo to Guernsey off Jersey. One ship sank and three burned but could reach harbour; six dead are recorded, with the remainder of the casualty line incomplete. On 8 December enemy reconnaissance continued over the islands. SS movements proceeded as planned; Army Coastal Artillery Battalion 755 was also moving.
