Diary Entry

6 July 1943 Group C mine checks and towline failures

6 July, message to division and Convoy Office: after arrival at 03:30 on 5 July, wireless was switched off; messages were to come through the Naval Signals Officer. Following the 22:00 readiness order, wireless was switched on and missing messages obtained from 7th Patrol Flotilla, but 2125/8 was absent and arrived later. Previously messages had normally been passed by the Signals Officer through Harbour Commandant. Request whether ground-mine checks may be done by day. Reply: repeat yesterday's task tonight; no daytime ground-mine checking.

22:15: M 4600, M 4605 and M 4607 cast off. 22:35: all streamed and activated gear; WNW force 2, sea 1–2, good visibility. The missed task resulted from a gap between copying the last messages and switching on the ship's own set; I discovered this only the following morning. M 4602 not combat-ready at Saint-Malo. Signed Ertel.
