Normandy radar reporting station — 1944-02-05
Night 5/6 February. Wind SW–W2–3, visibility 8–12 nautical miles, sea 1–2. Air Force WR D58 (Cap Hague) reports enemy air target north of Cap de la Hague 2110. 2130 flare drop and detonation; target attacked own Cherbourg–Guernsey convoy. 2330 order from Sea Commandant Normandy: increased defensive readiness for night. 0111 locating signal, unknown target BF3811; corrected 0119 by locating signal as own target, minesweepers.
Jersey detects unknown target 0118 in upper-left corner BF3577 at 16.5 km. Air Force WR Guernsey employed and confirms 0136. Jersey detects target again 0140. First enemy locating signal 0136. Definitely two to three MGBs. Course from upper-left to lower-right corner BF3577, centre 3811; speed 11–13 knots. Attempt to disrupt minesweepers’ sweeping between points 332 and 334. Further locating signals 0154 and 0217; target lost 0216 at 15 km. Sea Commandant Normandy, St Malo convoy control and Sea Commandant Channel Islands immediately notified. No firing. Detections passed to 3rd Security Division. Good cooperation with Air Force WR Goldfisch.
Mammut Jobourg tracks several enemy ships 1251–1402 from lower-right corner BF3145 via 3148, 3147 to left centre 2369. Thirteen locating signals for navigational assistance.
