Diary Entry
5 August 1941 Earlier July harbour diary submitted
Secret. Harbour Commandant, Channel Islands, G 705, 5 August 1941. To Sea Commander Cherbourg, concerning the war diary; reference G 1173 of 25 July. The office’s diary for 16–31 July is submitted for information. The place line reads Postort (postal location); it does not identify Peter Port.
The enclosed earlier copy names Korvettenkapitän Freiherr von Nostitz. It reports no incidents at St Helier and St Peter Port on 16 and 18–31 July. Its sole substantive entry, 17 July at 20:40, records the Naval Artillery Battalion 604 report of an explosion cloud on a ship, bearing 220° from “Normand Point”, fifteen nautical miles away, and departure of H.S. 186 to investigate. St Peter Port: no incidents. Signed at St Helier, Jersey, on 5 August.
This condensed version was expressly superseded by the revised July diary forwarded on 12 August. It is retained here as an earlier documentary version, not used to cancel the detailed movements recorded above.
