5 April 1942 St Malo convoy diary

Weather: WSW strong to stiff wind, visibility ten nautical miles, moderate to fairly rough sea. 08:00: after a bad-weather night without noteworthy incidents, heightened readiness is lifted. 09:30: order received for heightened readiness every night from 21:00 until 08:00, through the morning of 7 April. 10:00: V 209 is ordered to return to St Malo by day with two harbour-protection boats. 11:30: V 209 reports departure from Jersey at 13:00. 12:00: under 3rd Security Division teletype G 5389 in conjunction with G 5320, I order V 1510/704 to escort tug Volkmar with H 86 PM from Cherbourg to Guernsey on 6 April. No further tasks for 6 April.

Situation: V 206/08 ready Guernsey; V 209 to St Malo with HS 184 and 187; V 204/07/00/11/13 ready St Malo [00 as printed]; V 1510/704 ready Cherbourg; V 212 boiler cleaning St Malo; V 205 dock Cherbourg. No escorted tonnage.

Intentions for 6 April, there being no island convoy requests: V 206/08 ready Guernsey; V 204/07/09/10/11/13 ready St Malo, flotilla inspection; V 1510/704 daytime Cherbourg–Guernsey convoy, then night Guernsey–Alderney–Cherbourg convoy; V 212 boiler cleaning; V 205 dock Cherbourg. 21:00–08:00: heightened alert readiness. I spend the night aboard V 207.
