Diary Entry
30 December 1941 Channel Islands civilian morale
Among the British population of the Channel Islands, American entry into the war strengthened belief in an ultimate British victory. The large number of foreign labourers employed on the islands caused concern that hostile acts might be blamed on the resident population unless offenders were caught. Theft and drunkenness had already made some labourers unpopular. Communist and Gaullist agitation was barely evident; sabotage remained infrequent and Parisian terrorist activity found no recognisable response locally. Civilian supply remained tight and unchanged, relations with French authorities showed no new features, and co-operation with the military administration was good.
