29 June 1940 Admiral France: reconnaissance and bombing report
Commanding Admiral in France. Paris, 29 June 1940. Registry No. 75 secret command matter. Secret command matter!
To Naval High Command, Naval Staff; Group West; Naval Commander Northern France.
Urgent short letter.
Reconnaissance of the Channel Islands by Air Fleet 3 reveals numerous small fortifications. No final assessment yet of their age, garrisons or value. Alderney apparently uninhabited. On 28 June, 180 SD 50 bombs dropped on Helier and Peter harbours against columns of lorries and cars embarking. Light anti-aircraft fire from Savey [source spelling; apparently Sark]. Otherwise no defence established so far, even on low-level overflights of the islands. Luftwaffe is continuing reconnaissance.
Seal: Navy, Commanding Admiral West. Receipt stamp: Naval Commander Northern France, 3 July 1940, secret command matter 160. [Routing initials and filing note.]
