28 February 1944 Normandy radar reports concerning the Channel Islands
Normandy radar reporting station — 1944-02-28
Night 28/29 February. Wind N–NE6–7, visibility 5–8 nautical miles, sea 3–4. Report of presumed enemy targets, later found to be air targets or erroneous reading at Guernsey Goldfisch set, immediately passed to St Malo convoy control. Telephone audibility very poor. In both cases unacceptable delays of 10–15 minutes elapsed before convoy control clearly established these were not own ships.
Two enemy aircraft 2041,3.3 nautical miles east of point 324 on route, then course 0° to lower-left corner BF3528; circled there to upper centre 3552; 2052 upper centre 3553; 2055 centre 3553; then along Herz route to point 252. 2105 lost three nautical miles east of point 252 on route. Probably minelayers. Further single enemy aircraft, according to VHF speech relieving first, 2245 from lower-left corner BF3552 to centre 3551, circled once, two nautical miles east of point 324 on route to two nautical miles west of point 324, then via upper-right corner BF3551, lower-edge centre 3528 to right-edge centre 3528; circled there 2300, then to lower centre 3529. 2302 aircraft lost. Probably minelayer. Four locating signals for navigational assistance.
