25 May 1944 Channel Islands Sea Defence diary

Weather: wind from 248°, 3 metres per second. 01:04: Alderney Group alerted following detection of several enemy vessels in BF 3516, lower-left edge. Probably torpedo boats or destroyers, given the very definite radar detections.

01:18–01:20: naval batteries Elsass and Annes and army coastal Batterie Blücher fired under radar control on the targets, bearing 30°, range 99 hectometres [9,900 metres]. No hits observed; no enemy counteraction; no German losses. The radar plot clearly showed the enemy immediately turning north and withdrawing at high speed after the shelling. Ammunition expenditure: Elsass, eight 17-cm ballistic-cap shells; Annes, sixteen 15-cm ballistic-cap shells; Blücher, twelve 15-cm shells with impact fuze and small charge. 01:46: alert ended.
