Diary Entry

25 June 1943 Channel Islands Sea Defence diary

Weather: wind 225°, 2 m/sec. From 03:00 to 06:00, the 319th Infantry Division ordered Alert Level I.

From 09:30 to 09:45, Batterie Steinbruch conducted trial firing with time fuzes. Expenditure: eight 15-cm high-explosive shells, L 4.6, with S 60 time fuzes. The source adds “cm” after the L 4.6 designation.

Undated subsequent assessment by the Commanding Admiral Channel Coast concerning the 25 June entry, subject “Trial firing with time fuzes”: after the time fuzes requested for engaging convoys and repelling landings had arrived, authority was sought to release eight rounds for each heavy and super-heavy battery and twelve rounds for each light and medium battery. This would give all relevant batteries the necessary experience with time fuzes and prevent unsatisfactory effects if such firing suddenly became necessary in combat. Signed by the Chief of Staff for the Commanding Admiral; signature unclear. Naval Staff registry 1558/43.
