Normandy radar reporting station — 1944-05-23

Night 23/24 May. Wind WNW–SW2–4, visibility 8–12 nautical miles, sea 1–2. Normal radar ranges. FuMO51 Cap de la Hague II0151–0538 enemy transmissions. FuMO2 Percée 0100–0120 enemy transmissions, detection still possible. Percée on 23 May 0145–0418 interference from metal-foil drops. Nine own E-boats briefly detected only departing Cherbourg northeastward at 21.3 km. Convoy of three artillery lighters and four minesweepers Cherbourg–Le Havre attacked repeatedly by persistent fighter-bomber deployment from Cap Lévy onward. After reporting post 8/3 report and individual Normandy interception network bearings, convoy continually warned by locating signals. Thirteen warning locating signals sent.

Continuation of 23/24 May. 0214 report from Brittany Radar Centre: interception bearing on sea target BF2689, course NE. 0215 FuMO2 Guernsey II directed onto it, no result. Air Force Mammut Jobourg tracked enemy targets 2030–2125 from centre BF3147 to upper-right corner 3148. FuMO51 Hague II tracked enemy targets 0043–0126 in centre BF3155. Normandy interception network bearings 0324–0437 in BF3536, 0410–0514 in BF3273, 3275 to 3272; 2352–2359 in upper-right corner 3277: shipborne radar emitters. FuMO51 La Pernelle ordered to search BF3536, but no result because targets at range limit and set only partly serviceable. Interception network again reported shipborne emitter 0500 in BF3527. FuMO214 Jobourg directed onto it, contacts 0511–0539 in upper-right corner BF3543 classified as enemy. 0532 interception network reports target an air target, not sea target. 0545 Jobourg reports probably false contact. Enemy locating signals 0513 and 0517, cancelled 0552. Eight locating signals for navigational assistance.
