Diary Entry

2 August 1942 Channel Islands Sea Defence diary

Weather: wind from 90°, 2 metres per second.

19:20: two soldiers of Harbour Commandant Guernsey were killed by land mines while walking along a path near Fort George. The path lacked the prescribed warning signs. They were Maschinengefreiter Karl Gerasch, service number N 15031/41 T, and Matrose II Emil Klein, N 10295/41 E.T. [Names and service-number suffixes as read.] An incident report was submitted to establish responsibility. All soldiers on the island were again thoroughly warned about the danger of entering minefields. [The harbour report separately describes a mine-recovery accident; neither account is silently substituted for the other.]
