Diary Entry

12 August 1942 Group West correction on patrol support

Naval Group West, staff headquarters, 12 August 1942, secret command matter Gkdos 3573/42 A2, to Naval High Command, Naval War Staff; copies without annexes to Commander Security West, 3rd Security Division and St Malo Convoy Office. Forwards the 1–15 June diary after review.

On paragraph 1 of Commander Security West’s comments: discussion between Group West A1 and the Commander of Motor Torpedo Boats on 9 August established that Security West’s view was incorrect. The motor torpedo boats were in fact ready to sail shortly after the action became known. No immediate order was issued because the situation at sea was unclear; intervention by motor torpedo boats in a Channel action always carries great risk of mistaken identity. Nothing further to add. Signed for Group West by its chief of staff.
