At 20:45 about sixty twin-engined bombers attacked the harbour area. A bomb hit tore out a sea valve in the tug Hermes and she sank. The tug Normandie II suffered near-miss damage to her machinery but remained afloat. Railway and quay installations were damaged and the lighting and telephone systems failed.
