Diary Entry
10 August 1942 Naval Group West review of St Malo diary, 16–31 May
Secret Command Matter. Naval Group Command West, Gkdos 3417/42 A2, headquarters, 10 August 1942, to Naval High Command, Naval War Staff; information copies to Commander Security West, 3rd Security Division and Convoy Office St Malo. Submits the 16–31 May diary after examination.
On page 2, 16 May: as with the diary for 1–15 May, Commander Security West and the division pass over in silence Harbour Commandant Granville’s lax execution of convoy orders. On page 4, 18 May: all boats must have effective MES protection. Operating with MES must not overload electrical machinery enough to cause avoidable failures. Since measuring stations disagree on omitting degaussing in favour of greater current, the Degaussing Group (E.M.G., Entmagnetisierungsgruppe) has been asked to comment on the division’s remarks. Signed Saalwächter. [Handwritten routing notes are not fully legible.]
