Diary Entry

1 June 1944

Two Spitfires made an unsuccessful strafing attack on Battery Mirus, Guernsey, at 08:32. No casualties or material damage were reported. Later, hostile aircraft flew over St Peter Port and northern Guernsey; anti-aircraft artillery claimed one aircraft shot down. [T-1022/2174, PG 38468, scans 0289-0290]

05:00 situation report: at Le Havre the wind was west force 3, sea state 2, visibility about 10 nautical miles, overcast, temperature +12°C. During the night a heavy-bomb attack struck a German jamming/transmitter installation in the Le Havre area. The transmitter, accommodation and emergency generating plant were reported completely out of action, but there were no personnel casualties.

Between 00:13 and 00:40 enemy aircraft bombed the area west of Cherbourg and Landemer. The accommodation of an alert anti-aircraft battery was destroyed and seven men were missing. Bombs also fell in the minefield south of Cherbourg. A later detailed report estimated 40–50 aircraft and 400–500 bombs in a dive-bombing attack at Landemer: one 2-cm anti-aircraft gun and a radar/radio-location set were destroyed and another gun was damaged, although the battery remained capable of action.

The evening report added that two Thunderbolts had been shot down near Calais on 31 May. At 17:40 about 45 Marauders attacked 3./H.K.A.A. 1254 at Cap de la Hève with roughly thirty bombs. Gun No. 2 was temporarily unavailable because of a dud bomb; otherwise no damage was reported.
