1 July 1940 Draft order for occupation of Guernsey by the Naval Assault Detachment

Order for occupation of Guernsey by the Naval Assault Detachment.

1. The Naval Assault Detachment will arrive at Cherbourg airfield at 0830 on 1 July, ready to embark.

2. Loading by a Ju 52 squadron. As many motorcycles and bicycles as possible are to be taken along.

3. Landing in two waves.

4. After the second wave has landed at Guernsey airfield: (1) occupy the harbour fortifications of St Peter Port (officer patrol); (2) report to the island’s commanding officer; (3) reconnoitre and occupy the northwest [corner/part of the island; handwriting uncertain].

5. Central point: airport. All detached elements [are to maintain] motor or bicycle communications [middle words unclear].

6. No resistance of any substantial extent is to be expected. Wherever resistance occurs it is to be broken.

7. Air Fleet 3 has promised fighter protection. [Bombers, deleted] are to follow the transport aircraft [wording partly unclear].

8. Radio link between Guernsey airfield (aircraft radio) and Cherbourg airfield [final radio abbreviation unclear].

9. Naval Commander Northern France will be at Cherbourg airfield.

10. [Handwritten item partly illegible: water… initially …].

11. Cable station (including post office) to be occupied immediately.

12. Establish air defence at the airfield.

13. Naval Commander will probably arrive with the second wave.

14. Reports immediately after landing, via the airfield to Naval Commander.
