Diary Entry

1 February 1943 Intelligence monthly report for January 1943 with returns

Editorial note: The source uses “evacuation” for German removal or deportation measures affecting island civilians; the wording expresses the reporting authority’s perspective.

Among the population of the British Channel Islands, the new evacuation measures caused visible agitation. Recent military events have strengthened their belief in the final victory of the British mother country.

Enclosure 2 — Suicides: Grenadier Georg Helbig, searchlight platoon of Grenadier Regiment 582, attributed to an episode of mental depression; Soldier Albert Bergk, 716th Slaughtering Half-Company, attributed to fear of contracting syphilis. Attempted suicide: Gunner Florian Marinschek, 2/832nd Army Coastal Artillery Battalion; reason not yet established.

Enclosure 4: the 319th Division's intelligence monthly report did not arrive on time because shipping communications with the Channel Islands had failed. It will be forwarded on receipt. Courts-martial and suicides in the 319th Division area are included in the returns.

Translation note: The political and propagandistic judgements above are those of the German wartime author.
