80 years ago today the PDSA were working hard to save the animals of the Blitz. Between 1939 and 1945, dedicated PDSA Animal Rescue Squads help to save and treat more than 250,000 pets injured and lost during the Blitz. below is "Beauty", a Wirehaired Terrier owned by PDSA Superintendent Bill Barnet, is considered by many to be one of the world’s first ‘Rescue Dogs’.

Beauty was responsible for locating and saving the lives of 63 animals during her service and ended up receiving multiple awards for her bravery and dedication to duty. She was first awarded the PDSA Pioneer Medal, an award historically given exclusively to people, plus a Silver Medal inscribed ‘For services rendered’ by the Deputy Mayor of Hendon.

Beauty died in 1950 and is buried alongside other PDSA Dickin Medal recipients at the PDSAs Animal Cemetery in Ilford, Essex.

The PDSA are still going strong and visit their website https://www.pdsa.org.uk/get-involved/dm75/the-diligent/beauty

The December book recommendation is "The Americans on D-Day."

This book has 450 dramatic photographs captured in northern France during the first day and week of its liberation and is available on kindle! Click the photo to find out more. It also would make a fantastic Christmas Present.
