Occupied Landscapes is a project run by Phil & Kimberley to capture the Second World War Landscapes in Jersey and Normandy using traditional media formats, LiDAR and Photogrammetry. Due to the ongoing costs of housing our digital media, 3D scans, and maintaining our LiDAR scanner, we are fundraising through the Patreon app. On Patreon, we will be sharing lots more scans, behind-the-scenes photos, loads of traditional images of WW2 sites here in Jersey and in Normandy.
LiDAR and Photogrammetry are two methods for creating 3D models, differing in data collection: LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) uses laser pulses for high-accuracy, vegetation-penetrating distance mapping, creating dense point clouds great for terrain and engineering, while Photogrammetry uses overlapping photos for rich color/texture, better for visual details but struggles with foliage and low light. LiDAR offers superior vertical accuracy and can work in darkness; photogrammetry excels at visual realism, but both can be combined for comprehensive results, with LiDAR providing structure and photogrammetry adding visual context.
